The challenge

Our customer “Rurex-Stahl”, a leading producer of shear blades for cutting molten glass, had a bottleneck due to time-consuming manual handling steps in the grinding process of different blade types, consisting of a special anticorrosive alloy. Systec, already having automated the grinding of shear blades for Rurex in the past, was asked to extensively speed up the process, to contribute to higher quality and productivity demands and at the same time build a flexible all in one machine.

The solution

Systec managed to design and build a mechatronic grinding system consisting of four grinding stations working in parallel, provided with unsharpened blade sheets by a linear pick and place robot, delivering much higher productivity.

The blades are accurately placed and fixed by a pneumatic system with high holding forces and abrasion of the grinding disks is automatically measured and compensated by a special software algorithm during every grinding process, delivering to an outstanding quality.

Samples of sharpened knives can even be drawn during the production process to check quality.

Knives are stored in easily removable and refillable magazines, one for every grinding station, delivering state of the art ergonomics.

The amount of storable knives is sufficient for one whole shift of production.
